Tips for Creating Meaningful Goals That Stick
Happy New Year! Welcome to 2025! What are your thoughts about the upcoming year? Do you set goals or intentions for what you might want to achieve in the coming year?
Let’s talk about how set goals and achieve them – ones that align with your values and long-term goals. Not the “should” goals such as “I need to lose 10 pounds” or “I should eat better.” I want you to go deeper than that and examine goals and values that align with you and your personal values.
Let’s look at what some intentions or goals might be that truly support your emotional well-being.
This year, let’s look at goals differently.
1. Start Where You Are
Take a quiet moment (or two) and ask yourself: What do I really want to feel this year? Is it peace? Strength? Freedom? Let those feelings guide you as you look at how set goals and achieve them.
For example, if you want peace, your goals might include setting boundaries in relationships or creating a weekly self-care routine.
2. Make Your Goals Manageable
Larger goals set on New Year’s can quickly go by the wayside. Instead, focus on breaking your goals down into smaller, more manageable steps.
For example, if you want to run a marathon by the end of year, start by walking 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week. Increase the time and energy spent on this throughout the year. Remember to start with small steps and build on your accomplishments along the way. Manageable goals can reduce anxiety and help you stay motivated.
3. Stay Flexible
Life happens, and that’s okay. We all have things that arise that need our attention that take us away from focusing on our goals for the year. Take things day by day and modify your goals as needed. Flexibility in your goals is important and can help keep you moving forward.
4. Celebrate All of Your Wins
Every step forward is progress, no matter how small it seems. A step forward is a step forward. If you spent 10 minutes a day on a goal in one year, that would be over 60 hours. Small amounts of time do add up over time. Celebrate each step along the way something that would motivate you.
5. Seek Support When You Need It
Sometimes, life’s challenges make it hard to even think about goals, let alone achieve them. If you’re navigating grief, trauma, or emotionally abusive relationships, know that it’s okay to ask for help. Therapy can be a safe space to unpack those challenges and rediscover yourself and what you want to accomplish and do moving forward.
What Are Good New Year’s Goals?
Here are a few ideas to inspire you:
- Set boundaries to protect yourself and your well-being.
- Start a gratitude journal to focus on the positives in your life. Write down one positive thing that happens each day and by the end of the year, you will have 365 good things that happened in 2025.
- Commit to one act of self-care each week, like a walk in nature or a relaxing bath.
- Practice mindfulness to reduce stress.
